Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes says he regrets his actions after being given time to reflect on his talk with officials Sunday and his postgame interaction with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
Mahomes took heat Sunday after Chiefs receiver Kadarius Toney’s offsides call was ruled out for what would have been a go-ahead touchdown with less than two minutes left. Tony Travis took a cross-field pass from Kelce, who caught a pass from Mahomes, and completed a 49-yard touchdown. After the penalty, Mahomes began throwing incompletions on three straight plays, and the Bills won 20-17.
As the Bills touched the clock after getting the ball back, Mahomes yelled at the officials about the call.
“Obviously you don’t want to act like that, I mean, I’m worried, man. I love it — I love this game, and I love my teammates. I want to go out there and win everything. , but obviously you can’t do that, with officials or in life. Nobody can really be like that,” Mahomes said Monday. “More than anything, I regret the way I treated Josh,” she added [Allen] After the game, he had nothing to do with it.”
A WROC-TV Camera Mahomes was caught telling Allen: “Worst call I’ve ever seen. Offensive offsides on that play, man. F— terrible.”
Mahomes said Monday, “I was still hot and emotional, but you can’t do that. It’s not a good example for kids watching the game. I was more upset than myself on the sideline.”
On Sunday, Mahomes said he asked three different officials about the call and didn’t get a response, saying after the game, “Another game, we’re talking about notes. It’s not what we want for the NFL.”
However, on Monday, Mahomes admitted the call was correct.
“Of course I’ve seen it now, if he doesn’t check and they’re not good, it’s a mistake. It’s something you rarely see in the NFL. But it’s a mistake, it’s part of playing. The game, man, you learn from it, it’s part of being a person. Part of it is, learn from your mistakes and try to be better next time,” he said.
Earlier on Monday, head coach Andy Reid said he had not checked with the sideline official to make sure Toney was lined up correctly. Asked what he was going to train Tony for this week, Reed said, “Make sure you check, check the guy next to you to see if you’re aligned … He was 2 inches away or an inch from legal.”
Mahomes could face fines from the NFL for his actions and comments and said Monday that he will accept any punishment that comes his way.
“You have to accept the consequences of your actions, and that’s something I’ve always stood by. I’m not overtly acting the way I usually do, and if there are consequences, I’ll be overtly accepting them.” he said.
