McDonald's suffered a system outage that closed stores and disrupted online and apps. Orders from all over the world including USA, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.
“We are aware of a technology outage that affected our restaurants; the issue is now being resolved,” McDonald's ( MCD ) told CNN in a statement Friday. “Notably, this issue is not related to a cybersecurity incident.”
A spokesman declined to provide further details, including the cause or extent of the outage.
A cashier at a McDonald's store in New York told CNN that the store's IT system went down around 1 a.m. and came back up around 5 a.m.
Meanwhile, McDonald's Japan X said in a post on Friday: “Several stores across the country have temporarily suspended operations.”
In England, Maria Avram works at a McDonald's restaurant In London, he told CNN, the system went down between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. local time (2 a.m. and 3 a.m. ET), and employees had to take orders in person and tell colleagues in the kitchen what to cook.
A McDonald's Australia spokesperson told CNN that its restaurants across the country were affected by the outage.
Problems have also been reported in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
McDonald's Hong Kong said on Facebook: “The mobile ordering and self-ordering kiosks are not working due to a computer system outage. Order directly at the restaurant counter. Those services have now been restored, it said later.
The Taiwanese fast-food chain's McDelivery service said on its website: “The system is undergoing maintenance, and online and telephone ordering services are temporarily suspended.”
Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS quoted McDonald's Taiwan as saying that some of its restaurants and McDelivery were temporarily unable to conduct transactions due to internet disruptions. McDonald's assured customers it was investigating the situation and making necessary repairs, TVBS reported.
There is McDonald's Over 41,800 stores Worldwide, nearly 13,500 are in the United States, its largest market.
Of the other countries known to be affected, Japan has the largest number of McDonald's restaurants – nearly 3,000 – followed by the UK with 1,500 stores and Australia with more than 1,000.
