'Prolonged' storm could bring rain and heavy snow to Upstate NY in early April

Syracuse, NY — A multi-day storm will hit upstate New York on Tuesday and last through the work week, dropping rain and heavy snow into Friday.

Wet snow from the storm can cause slippery roads and power outages. Snow will be heavy at higher elevations, especially later in the week.

“A prolonged storm is expected to affect the region with rain and snow from Tuesday night into Thursday” said National Weather Service. “Significant accumulating snow is likely to increase.”

The storm will begin Tuesday as rain, as a system sweeps out of the Ohio Valley and into upstate New York. Heavy rain is possible Wednesday, though the lack of recent rain makes flooding unlikely, the weather service said.

One to three inches of precipitation, in the form of rain and snow, could fall across the Upstate.

Rain will turn to wet snow Wednesday night or Thursday as cooler air moves in later this week. Snow will start first in higher elevations like the Adirondacks, then move into the valleys as temperatures continue to drop.

A high pressure system is expected to push out the storm on Friday, bringing clear skies through Saturday and Sunday. While it's too early for firm forecasts, that high pressure system is expected to stick around until Monday, which should mean clear skies for the total solar eclipse on April 8.

This map shows snow expected across upstate New York through Thursday night. Especially in Central New York, heavy snow will fall Thursday night and Friday as the storm's edge winds blow across the Great Lakes.
