Shane Lowry led the way in truly brutal conditions on day two after shooting a 152nd Open third-round 69.
Englishman Daniel Brown was the surprise package on day one, finishing his first day in a joint lead with Shane Lowry in a major, but the Irishman gained two more strokes to end Pile’s first day.
With those two tied at the top of the leaderboard, he calmly navigated the challenging conditions to shoot a 68 and keep himself a five-over for the weekend. Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm are in the chasing pack.
The powerful wind brought bad luck to some, as Tiger Woods tied his worst two-round score in a major, and Rory McIlroy and Bryson D’Chambeau both failed to make the cut.

Lowry escapes the play on the 11th hole and leads
“I had a great temporary success,” Lori explained. “The umpire asked me if I wanted to go down (the fairway) and find my first, and I said no. So I thought OK.
“Then we get down there and somebody’s figured it out, so obviously you’ve got to go and identify it. I saw where I could drop through the whole process of those 20 minutes and I was very calm and composed and knew I was doing the right thing.
“And Darren (Reynolds, his caddy) did a great job. He told me we had plenty of time and there was no need to rush it.
“To be honest, I was happy to get out of there with a six. It wasn’t a disaster. I felt really calm and composed the last couple of days. I really felt in my comfort zone.
“Sometimes you’re in a mindset where you’re going to perform better than other times. I feel like that in my head this week, where I’m ready to take what’s coming, I’m ready to take out what’s given to me.
“Anything thrown at me, I feel like I’m ready to take it on the chin. If I’m given a chance on Sunday I know I can do it and it’s good to be at any stage.

Lowry escapes the play on the 11th hole and leads
Lowry felt he “did his part” by taking his tee shot on the 11th in play, but on his second shot a cameraman was distracted and dragged it into the ravine.
After taking a penalty drop, Lowry hit his fourth shot to about 10 feet, giving him a chance to save a bogey, his original ball only to be discovered by spectators.
That said, it was still in play, and after a long delay when it was decided where he could take a drop, Lowry hit his approach short of the green and eventually ended up with a double-bogey six.
Former Ryder Cup player David Howell, an on-course commentator for Lowry’s team for Sky Sports, said the spectator who saw the ball was “a bit sheepish” when he realized Lowry’s intent: “He feels bad.”

Shane Lowry takes the lead in The Open
Shane Lowry believes he is ready to take whatever is thrown “on the cheek” after keeping his bid for a second Open title firmly in place at Royal Troon.
Lowry added a 69 for his opening 66 to take a seven-over-half and a two-shot lead over English duo Justin Rose and Don Brown who entered the 36-hole final qualifying round earlier this month.
